4. Sew the white 1½" x 32½" strips to the sides of the quilt center. Press. Sew the white 1½" x 34½" strips to the top and bottom of the quilt center. Press. The quilt should measure 34½" square, including seam allowances.

5. Sew the gray 3½" x 34½" strips to the sides of the quilt. Press. Sew the gray 3½" x 40½" strips to the top and bottom of the quilt. Press. The quilt should measure 40½" square, including seam allowances.

1. Cut the backing fabric into two 1⅜-yard lengths. Remove the selvages and sew the pieces together side by side, referring to “How to Piece a Quilt Backing” on page 10. Press the seam allowances to one side.

2. Layer and baste the backing, batting, and quilt top. Quilt as desired. The quilt shown is machine quilted in an allover swirl pattern.

3. Trim the batting and backing even with the edges of the quilt top.

4. Using the red stripe 2½"-wide strips, make double-fold binding and attach it to the quilt.
